
Robert N. Stubblefield was born in McMinn Co., Tennessee on February 14, 1843. He was the eighth child of Robert Nelson Stubblefield and Matilda Caroline Lawson. According to the 1850 census, Robert was living with his parents and eight brothers and sisters and had attended school that year. In 1857 Robert moved with his parents to Henry Co., Missouri.
By 1860, the family was living in Deepwater Township, Henry Co., Missouri with father, mother, Robert, two sisters and four brothers.
On February 3, 1862, Robert enlisted in Sedalia, Missouri as a Corporal in Co. H, 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry for the war. He had blue eyes, black hair, a fair complexion, and was 5 feet 5 inches tall. He listed his occupation as a farmer.
In the Battle of Lone Jack, Robert was wounded and captured. He was paroled at Little Rock, Arkansas on November 6, 1862 and delivered to Helena, Arkansas on November 10, 1862. He was mustered out of the 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry on April 20, 1865 in Warrensburg, Missouri.
On January 27, 1867, Robert married Elizabeth Jane Dobson in Bates Co., Missouri. On December 27, 1867, their first son was born. He lost both a brother and a sister in 1869. In 1870 Robert, Elizabeth and three of their children were living with Elizabeth’s mother. In the fall of 1878, he was elected constable of Deepwater Township and was reelected twice.
According to the 1880 census, Robert and Elizabeth lived in Bates Co., Missouri with three daughters, one son, Robert’s mother-in-law and a nephew. Robert listed himself as a farmer.
On May 24, 1883, Robert filed for a pension listing Co. H, 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry.
On the 1890 Veterans Schedule, Robert listed Company H of the 7th Missouri Cavalry for his service. He listed that he was wounded in the thigh.
The 1900 census shows that Robert and Elizabeth were still living in Bates Co., Missouri and one son, one daughter, a mother-in-law and a servant were living with them. In 1910, Robert and his wife were living with his mother-in-law and a hired man.
Robert died on April 19, 1918 and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Bates Co., Missouri.
