Johann “Christopher” Seitter

Christopher Seitter was born in Enzweihingen Wurttenburg Germany on June 15, 1845. He was the oldest child of Johann Christopher Seitter and Carolina Christina Schmid. In 1853, Christopher and his parents immigrated to the Uniter States. They sailed from Antwerp aboard the “Bark Mayflower” and landed at Ellis Island, New York.

On April 1, 1855, a son was born into the family in Hamilton Co., New York and on September 12, 1857, a daughter was born into the family in Oneida Co., New York. In 1859 the family was in Adams Co. Illinois. By 1860 the family was living in Caldwell Co., Missouri.

On March 28, 1862, Christopher mustered into service in Co. E, 6th Missouri State Militia Cavalry in Cameron, Missouri. He had black eyes, dark hair, a dark complexion and was 5 feet 6 inches tall. He listed his occupation as a farmer. The official documentation listed him as Christopher Sider. He reenlisted and mustered in on April 22, 1864 in Springfield, Missouri as a Veteran Volunteer. On August 13, 1864 he transferred into the 13th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry in accordance with General Order No. 124. Christopher mustered out of service at Springfield, Missouri on March 27, 1865.

Chritopher was in the Battle of Lone Jack, and he was not wounded and did not lose his horse valued at $100. On August 30 1862 he was sick and was sent to the U.S.A. General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri and returned to service.

On May 7,1864 Christopher lost both his father and a brother when they drowned because their wagon was swept away in a swollen river.

On February 14, 1872, Christopher married Christina Grouse in Springhill, Missouri. She was born in Muskingum, Ohio on February 14, 1854. On December 30,1872 a son was born to the couple. On February 27,1875 another son was born, and on December 6, 1876 a third son was born to them. On July 17, 1878, a daughter was added to the family.

According to the 1880 census, Christopher, Christina and four children were living in Fairview Township, Caldwell Co., Missouri. He listed himself as a farmer. Between 1881 and 1888 four more children were added to the family. Another daughter came along in 1893. Christopher’s mother passed away on January 24, 1894.

By 1901, the family was living in Blaine Co., Oklahoma. By 1910, Christopher, Christina, three daughters and an adopted son lived in Canadian Township, Blaine Co., Oklahoma. In 1911 the family moved to Checotah, McIntosh Co., Oklahoma. In 1916 they moved back to Blaine Co.

On the 1920 census, Christopher. Christina and one daughter lived in Geary City, Blaine Co., Oklahoma. He was a farmer and was a naturalized citizen. The date of his naturalization was April 23, 1908. His wife, Christina, died on August 22, 1925.

On the 1930 census, Christopher, a daughter and a servant were living in his $3,000 home in Geary, Oklahoma. On May 24, 1932 Christopher died and is buried with his wife in the Geary Cemetery, Geary, Oklahoma.
