Old Fashioned Independence Day 1908 G.A.R. Encampment
Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) old soldiers who fought during the Civil War invite you to join them as they recreate a 1908 G.A.R. Reunion Celebration on Saturday, July 2, at the Lone Jack Battlefield Museum, Cemetery and Park. The museum is located ½ block south of US Hwy 50 at the Lone Jack exit.
Experience a re-creation of a G.A.R. formal memorial ceremony as these old Union soldiers of the Battle of Lone Jack return to dedicate a monument to their comrades fallen in the battle and interred in the cemetery. Listen as Union veteran William Roney tells his heartbreaking tale leading to this monument’s creation. Members of G.A.R. Post #37 will dedicate the long overdue monument.
The encampment celebration will begin at 9am with the Raising of the Colors by members of Boy Scout Troop #33 and continue until 4pm.
Fun for the whole family! Kids, learn about history the exciting, immersible way as the park is filled with old soldiers reminiscing about the battle and telling tall tales of exploits. Dedicated and knowledgeable living historians will speak on patriotic topics and recite patriotic documents. Women are invited to volunteer with the Broom Brigade while the men watch.
The Greater Kansas City American Legion Brass Ensemble will perform Independence Day music. Vocalist Sara Hedges will sing from the G.A.R. songbook. Later she will lead a sing-along for the whole family of patriotic songs.
