7TH MISSOURI CAVALRY
On the 16th of August was fought the Battle of Lone Jack in which
were engaged 306 officers and men of the 7 Cavalry Missouri
Volunteers forming a portion of a force of about 800 men under
command of Major Foster 7 Cav M.S.M. The loss sustained by the
Regt, in this action in killed and wounded was very heavy of the 306
engaged in the action 107 were killed and wounded.

Co A - Under the Command of Capt. Brawner, Lt. Bunner, the whole under command of
Major Foster marched to Lone Jack, a distance of 32 miles arrived there the evening of
the 15th, had a skirmish with 800 men under Cockrell, drove them from the ground.  
Next morning the 16th, we were attacked by about 32 hundred men under Quantrill,
Hayes (sic), Coffee and others, fought four hours loosing (sic) five men killed and ten
wounded, loosing (sic) 26 horses killed – ret’d to Lexington on the eve of the 16th.

Co C - Capt. H. P. Spellman, Lieuts. C. R. Combs, Alfred M Baltzell, with 62 Enlisted men
marched with a detachment under the command of E. Foster 8th M.S.M. (actually the
7th MSM Cav.) on the 15th day of August 1862 the advanced guard came upon the
enemy’s pickets and drove them in and the enemy 800 strong retreated.  Encamped for
the night at Lone Jack on the morning of the 16th the enemy about 3,000 strong
attacked the command of Maj. Foster after a severe engagement lasting about 5 hours
they were driven back with heavy loss when they were reinforced by 800 men under Col.
Coffee the command Maj. Foster thought proper to retreat leaving two pieces of artillery
spiked, the horses having been shot down.  Returned to Lexington on the evening of the
16th having marched over 60 miles.

Co E - A detachment of 50 men Co. E 7th Cav Mo Vols under Lieut. John Schee of same
Co. formed part of a force of 800 under command of Maj. Foster 6th Regt, MSM (actually
7th MSM) and left Lexington, MO Aug 15, 1862, marched same day 35 miles to Lone
Jack, Jackson Co. Mo and camped in the street with thick brush and cornfields on either
side. Were surrounded and attacked at daybreak next morning by 4,000 rebels, under
command of Cottrel (Cockrell) Coffee Hays Thompson & Quantrel. After 5 hours hard
fighting the rebels were repulsed. Our loss was 50 killed and thrice the number wounded.

Major Foster was severely wounded & taken from the field.  Most of the line officers were
either killed or wounded. Loss of Co. E 5 killed & 17 wounded. 3 of whom have since
died.  Lieut. Schee was severely wounded.  Rebel loss 80 killed and 200 to 300 wounded.

Co F - Capt. Miller, Lieut. McQuary & 48 men with detachment from other companies of
the 7th Cav Regt. Mo Vol were ordered out on a scout August 14th.  The whole under
command of Maj. Foster 8th MSM (7th MSM) having marched thirty five miles distance
from Lexington, August 16th met and engaged the enemy under command of Cols.
Coffee, Cockrell, & two privates of Co. F were killed and seven wounded.  Twenty four
horses lost in action.
