This nonprofit corporation is organized to support, protect, and preserve the unique history of the Lone Jack area. The primary focus is on the Civil War Cemetery and adjoining grounds, and the Civil War Museum. The desire is to ensure the future education of our children, to go forward while remembering our very important past.
In 2000 the Lone Jack Historical Society, Inc. was formed. The desire is to ensure the future education of our children, to go forward while remembering our very important past. On October 12, 2006, President Bush signed legislation that designated several new National Heritage Areas. The border counties of Missouri and Kansas have been designated as, “Freedom’s Frontier.” This is a wonderful honor and we are very excited about the impact this designation is going to have for the Lone Jack Civil War Battlefield Museum and Cemetery. Over the course of the next few months we will be working to complete and file necessary paperwork as well as strengthen our association with the many other organizations, both private and government. To learn more about National Heritage Areas, please visit the National Parks Service website at: www.cr.nps.gov/heritageareas The Lone Jack Historical Society are also members of the Border War Network association of historical societies who have joined together to promote their sites and preserve the stories of the Missouri-Kansas Border Wars. The group includes members from Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Cass, Bates, and Vernon counties in Missouri and Johnson, Douglas, and Miami counties in Kansas . A website is being developed along with brochures and signage for each member site. Our goal is to promote the stories of the people who lived and died during this bloody era. The story of the Border Wars is finally beginning to gain national attention and we want to promote tourism for each site. By joining together we are able to access greater resources and are able to exchange information in a prompt manner. We are very excited to be a part of this newly formed organization. Further information will be forthcoming. In July 2006 the Museum became the sole responsibility of the Society. We are pleased to report that the number of visitors and the gift shop sales has enabled us get off to a great start. Our summer hours required a good number of volunteers and you answered the call! Thank you! Please remember that as of November 1st we returned to the winter hours and are open only Saturday and Sunday. As a volunteer I have had the pleasure of meeting many people, from many states, who have ties to the Battle of Lone Jack. Volunteering is almost like an adventure because you never know who’s coming to visit and what their family story consists of.
